Key points

  • Bodum USA is recalling about 5.9 million French press coffee makers with replaceable 8-cup and 12-cup glass carafes, sold in the US from 1974 through October 2026.
  • A damaged or cracked carafe can break during use, and stirring with a metal spoon is one way the glass gets damaged, the CPSC says. Bodum has 70 breakage reports, 48 of them involving burns.
  • The CPSC lists the remedy as a repair: Bodum sends a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label. Earlier recalls of Bodum coffee presses, in 2014 and 2019, offered refunds.
  • The recall covers the Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya models.
  • The same day, Whatever Works recalled about 8,709 Microwave Grillers after three reports of fires, and is offering full refunds.

Bodum USA is recalling about 5.9 million French press coffee makers, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced on October 29, 2026. The recall covers 8-cup and 12-cup presses with replaceable glass carafes in eight model lines, sold in the US from 1974 through October 2026 for about $15 to $65. According to the CPSC, a carafe that is damaged or cracked can break unexpectedly while in use, which poses a risk of serious burns, and stirring the coffee with a metal spoon is one of the ways the glass can be damaged.

Which presses are covered

The recall names the Bistro, Brazil, Caffettiera, Chambord, Crema, Java, Jesper and Kenya models. Most carry the Bodum name on the frame and inner lid, and the glass carafes are engraved with it, along with product warnings. The presses were made in Portugal and Thailand and sold at Target, Walmart and coffee and home goods stores, and online at Bodum.com, Amazon.com, Target.com, Walmart.com and other retailers. The CPSC says photos and model details for checking a press are on the recall website.

What Bodum is offering

The CPSC tells owners to stop stirring coffee in the glass carafe with metal spoons or utensils right away and to contact Bodum. Bodum will send a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label telling users not to use a cracked or damaged carafe and not to stir its contents with metal. The CPSC classifies this remedy as a repair. By Bodum USA's count, there have been 70 reports of a carafe breaking during use, and 48 of them involved burns.

  • Recall number: 27-055 on the CPSC notice.

How it compares with earlier Bodum press recalls

The CPSC's recall database lists two earlier recalls of Bodum coffee presses. Both were far smaller, and both offered refunds.

The CPSC also points out that, under federal law, no one may sell a product that is subject to a voluntary recall made in consultation with the agency. That matters if you sell kitchen gear secondhand.

Also recalled on October 29: microwave grillers

On the same day, Whatever Works recalled about 8,709 Microwave Grillers, model K4001, which the CPSC says can overheat and ignite. Three of the grills have caught fire, according to reports received by the company, and no one has reported an injury. The grills are rectangular, with a white plastic exterior, black clips on the side and two non-stick black metal plates; the model number appears on the purchase receipt. They were sold online at Whateverworks.com from January 2025 through June 2026 for about $22.

Whatever Works is offering a full refund, and the CPSC says owners should stop using the grills right away. The company asks owners to write “Recalled” on the grill in permanent marker, email a photo of it, and return it with a prepaid label. Our guide to checking recalls before you buy a kitchen appliance explains how to look up a model on the CPSC's site.
